1.1 NEW TIMBER - UNTREATED
Ensure the wood is thoroughly dry. The moisture content
must be less than 15% before painting can commence.
It is strongly recommended that any unprotected wood
not be allowed to weather outdoors for more than two
weeks before it is protected with some finish that will
prevent photodegradation and water damage. ref.: Forest
Service U.S.Dept. of Agriculture.
Precaution: Painting should be carried out when the
temperature is above 10+C and the relative humidity
is less than 80%.
1.2 OLD TIMBER SURFACES
1.2.1 In poor condition
a) Remove all existing paint by use of power
sander, paint remover and/or thorough burning off.
b) Wire brush and thoroughly sand all surfaces.
c) Fill all holes, blemishes and cracks, then sand smooth.
1.2.2 In reasonable condition
a) Remove all loose and flaking paint, sand
and feather back all edges, spot prime all bare surfaces.
b) Fill all indentations, holes and cracks and then
sand smooth.
1.3 CLEAN
Clean with a brush and BIO Thinner to remove all traces
of oil, grease, wax and dirt.
1.4 PEST AND FUNGUS PROTECTION
To protect against fungus and insects see under section
2.
1.5 SAND DOWN
a) Always sand along the grain
b) Start with 60-120 grade paper
c) Dust and brush the surface clean
d) Fine-sand with 180-240 grade paper
e) Dust and brush the surface clean
f) If you need to cut back further, use 200-300 gradepaper
or steel wool.
1.6 TIMBER ENHANCEMENT
To bring out the colour and figure of the wood and
to promote natural ageing, brush on, dip or spray on
one coat of either of the following:
they may be applied neat or thinned up to 50% with
BIO Thinner.
